Consultation & Fees

Consultation and Fees Overview

How much is this case going to cost? It’s not always the first question clients ask. But it’s right up there – and for good reason. Most divorce lawyers refuse to be upfront about their fees. Or they are too inexperienced to know at the outset what a reasonable fee is in a particular case.

Fort Lauderdale divorce attorney Andrew Foster believes that legal fees should be transparent. You have the right to know how much your divorce or family law case will cost in advance.

That's why your initial consultation with Fort Lauderdale divorce attorney Andrew Foster is FREE.

Consultation and Strategy Session

We know what you're thinking. Many divorce lawyers who claim to offer “free consultations” do it simply to get you into the office for their real sales pitch. But, they almost never give you the kind of information that you can actually use until after they get your money.

We do things differently. Our consultations are more like strategy sessions. Mr. Foster will spend up to 30 minutes answering any questions you have. You will get the benefit of his training at one of the top trial schools in the United States combined with his 15 years of experience as a Fort Lauderdale divorce lawyer. Mr. Foster will help you to develop realistic goals and he will outline a customized legal strategy tailored to meet those goals as quickly as possible.

For your convenience, we also offer telephone consultations. The telephone consultation is the same as the in-office consultation except that it takes place over the telephone. Once your telephone consultation is scheduled, you will be given instructions on how to provide any documents that you would like us to review in advance.

At the end of your consultation, you may want to discuss hiring us to handle all or part of your case. At that time, we will be in a better position to quote a fee or retainer based on your specific circumstances.

Divorce Retainers and Fees

Although our legal fees are determined on a case-by-case basis, the information on this page represents our best estimates based on past experience.

Uncontested Divorce
An uncontested divorce is one where the parties agree on all major issues prior to filing for divorce. Fort Lauderdale divorce lawyer Andrew Foster will prepare all of the necessary paperwork, including the marital settlement agreement, and appear in court on your behalf at the final hearing. The flat fee for an uncontested divorce can be as low as $1,500.

Contested Divorce
A contested divorce is one where the parties are unable to agree on major issues like alimony, child custody, child support, timesharing (visitation), or the division of property. The initial retainer in a contested divorce case depends on the number of issues that have to be resolved and our estimate of the cost to get your case through mediation where the majority of cases are resolved. The retainer in a contested divorce case is generally around $2,500 but can be less (or more) depending on the issues involved.

Hourly Rates
Most divorce attorneys bill hourly for their work. Fort Lauderdale divorce lawyer Andrew Foster charges an hourly rate of $300. The rate for paralegals, law clerks, and legal assistants is between $95 and $135. All hourly rates are subject to change without updating this page.

Unbundled Services

Some clients prefer to handle their cases on their own. But maybe they need a little help. For those clients, we offer unbundled legal services – also known as limited scope representation – for a flat fee or a significant discount on our normal hourly rate. For example, we can draft your divorce or family law documents and you can file them yourself. Or, if you have been served with papers like a summons, a petition, or a settlement agreement, we can review them for you.

Unbundled legal services provide an affordable and cost-effective alternative to traditional legal representation for clients who are more cost-conscious and are comfortable handling some or most of the work on their cases on their own.
